B2B GUIDE · PRINTED PACKAGING · 2026

A practical comparison of cost, print durability, shelf life, lead time and recyclability for FMCG, snacks, detergent and food brands buying printed packaging at scale.

Quick answer: Choose surface printed LDPE/LLDPE film when you need economical, high-volume branded packaging with moderate shelf-life needs, such as detergent and soap wraps, outer bundles, agri inputs and short-cycle food packs. Choose a reverse printed laminate when the product needs a high oxygen and moisture barrier or a premium scuff-proof finish, such as long shelf-life snacks and oily foods. Many large FMCG manufacturers use both across their SKU range. Super Polymers manufactures rotogravure surface printed films with up to 8 colours.

What Is Surface Printing and Reverse Printing?

Surface printed film

The ink is printed on the outer surface of a single film such as LDPE or LLDPE. The film goes straight to the packing line as a printed roll. There is no lamination step, so production is faster and the structure stays simple.

Reverse printed laminate

The ink is printed on the inside of a clear outer film (usually PET or BOPP) and then laminated to a sealant layer such as PE. The ink is sandwiched between layers, so it cannot be scratched off. The combined structure also gives a stronger barrier.

For a detailed look at laminate structures, see our complete guide to food packaging laminates.

Surface Printed Film vs Reverse Printed Laminate: Side by Side

Factor Surface printed film Reverse printed laminate
Ink position Outer surface Trapped between layers
Typical structure Mono-layer or co-ex LDPE / LLDPE PET or BOPP + adhesive + PE
Scuff and rub resistance Good with the right inks and overprint varnish Excellent
Barrier (oxygen and moisture) Moderate High
Cost per kg Lower (no lamination step) Higher
Lead time Shorter Longer (lamination and curing)
Recyclability Easier: mono-material PE Harder: mixed materials
Best for Detergent, soap, outer wraps, bundles, agri inputs, short shelf-life foods Long shelf-life snacks, oily or moisture-sensitive foods, premium SKUs

When Surface Printed Film Is the Smarter Choice for Large Manufacturers

  • High-volume, cost-sensitive SKUs. Removing the lamination step lowers cost per kg and cost per pack. That adds up quickly across crores of units.
  • Outer and secondary packaging. Printed bundles, over-wraps and multipack wraps don’t need a high barrier. They need brand visibility and strength.
  • Detergent, soap and home care. These are tough, moisture-tolerant products where a PE-based printed film performs well.
  • Faster launches and seasonal packs. Shorter lead times help when marketing needs new artwork on shelves quickly.
  • Recyclability and EPR goals. Mono-material PE packaging is easier to recycle, which helps brand owners working towards Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) targets under India’s Plastic Waste Management Rules.
Plant tip: If your printed film is going onto an automatic form-fill-seal machine, share the machine model and sealing temperature with your supplier. The film’s slip, sealing layer and print registration marks must be matched to the machine.

When You Need a Reverse Printed Laminate Instead

  • Products that need long shelf life and protection from oxygen and moisture, such as chips, namkeen and oily snacks.
  • Packs that get heavy handling on retail shelves, where scratch-proof print is critical.
  • Premium high-gloss SKUs where shelf appeal justifies the higher cost.

For snacks, nitrogen flush packaging film is often the right answer. Read more in our guide to nitrogen flush film for namkeen and snack packaging.

Print Quality Checks to Demand on Bulk Orders

For large manufacturers, a print defect is multiplied across thousands of packs. Agree on these checks before the first order:

  • Colour matching: approve a printed proof against your brand colour standards before the production run.
  • Registration accuracy: multi-colour prints must stay in register across the full roll.
  • Ink adhesion (tape test): ink should not lift when tape is applied and pulled off.
  • Rub and scuff resistance: important for surface printed packs that travel in cartons.
  • Odour and residual solvent: critical for food packaging. Ask how the supplier controls it.
  • Eye-mark and repeat length: must match your FFS machine settings exactly.
  • Roll specifications: width, core size, roll diameter and unwinding direction as per your machine.

What Drives the Cost of Surface Printed Film?

Cost driver Why it matters How to optimise
Number of colours Each colour needs its own rotogravure cylinder Simplify artwork where brand guidelines allow
Cylinders (one-time) Fixed cost per design Standardise pack sizes so one cylinder set serves more volume
Film micron and width Directly sets film weight per pack Right-size the micron with trials; avoid over-specifying
Order volume Setup cost is spread over more kilograms Consolidate SKUs into larger, scheduled runs
Artwork changes New artwork can mean new cylinders Plan promotional changes in advance

Frequently Asked Questions

What is surface printed film?

It is a packaging film, usually LDPE or LLDPE, with the design printed on its outer surface, commonly by rotogravure. It is used without lamination for economical branded packaging.

Is surface printed film food safe?

Yes, when it is produced with food-grade polymers and suitable inks, and residual solvent and odour are controlled. For direct food contact, share your product details so the right structure can be recommended.

How many colours can you print?

We print up to 8 colours by rotogravure, with gloss or matte finish options.

Is surface printed film cheaper than a laminate?

Generally yes, per kg, because it skips the lamination and curing steps. Whether it suits your product depends on the barrier and shelf life you need.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Our minimum order is 300 kg. One-time cylinder costs apply for new designs.
