How large manufacturers choose the right micron, roll type and supplier for shrink film, and how to cut film cost per pack without slowing the line.
Why Shrink Film Choice Matters at Plant Scale
For a small packer, shrink film is a consumable. For a bottling plant, detergent unit or FMCG manufacturer running several shifts, it drives three numbers the plant head watches every month:
- Line uptime: film that tears, sticks or shrinks unevenly stops the tunnel and creates rework.
- Rejected or damaged packs: loose bundles open in transit and cause breakage claims from distributors.
- Film cost per pack: a few microns of extra thickness across lakhs of packs a month is a large, invisible cost.
That is why procurement teams at large plants rarely buy on the lowest price per kg alone. They buy on consistency: the same gauge, shrink behaviour and roll quality every batch, so the line settings never need to change.
LDPE vs LLDPE Blend vs POF vs PVC Shrink Film
Different shrink films suit different jobs. Here is how they compare for Indian manufacturing use:
| Film type | Typical use | Strengths | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| LDPE shrink film | Bottle multipacks, carton bundling, detergent and soap packs | Strong holding force, tough, economical for heavy collation packs | Needs correct tunnel temperature; lower gloss than POF |
| LDPE/LLDPE blend | Heavier bundles, beverage packs, export wrapping | Better puncture and tear resistance, allows down-gauging | Blend ratio must be consistent batch to batch |
| POF (polyolefin) | Single retail units, gift packs, display boxes | High clarity and gloss, thin gauges | Lower holding force for heavy multipacks; higher cost per kg |
| PVC | Older retail over-wrap applications | Low shrink temperature | Brittle in cold, fumes when heated; being phased out by many brands |
For collation and transit packs (6 x 1 L water, 12 x 500 ml beverages, detergent bundles, cartons) LDPE and LDPE/LLDPE blends remain the practical choice. That is the category Super Polymers manufactures.
Shrink Film Micron Guide by Application
The right thickness depends on pack weight, how sharp the product edges are, and how rough the transit route is. The ranges below are typical starting points. Always confirm with a trial on your line.
| Application | Typical micron range | Recommended roll type |
|---|---|---|
| Light carton or tray bundling | 35 – 50 micron | Single-wound |
| Water and beverage bottle multipacks | 45 – 75 micron | Center-folded or single-wound, based on machine |
| Detergent, soap and FMCG bundles | 40 – 60 micron | Center-folded |
| Chemical, agrochemical and heavy packs | 75 – 150 micron | Thick-gauge single-wound |
| Printed retail-ready packs | As per pack weight | Printed shrink film (1–2 colour logo) |
Single-wound or center-folded?
Single-wound rolls suit sleeve wrappers and carton bundling. Center-folded rolls suit L-sealers and bottle packs, where the product sits between the two folded layers for uniform shrinking. We manufacture both. Match the roll type to your wrapping machine first, then fine-tune the micron.
How to Calculate Shrink Film Cost per Pack
Price per kg tells you little on its own. Large buyers compare suppliers on cost per finished pack. The formula is simple:
(0.92 g/cm³ is the approximate density of LDPE.)
Film cost per pack = film weight (kg) × price per kg
Worked example (illustrative): a sleeve of 0.60 m × 0.45 m at 50 micron weighs 0.60 × 0.45 × 50 × 0.92 ≈ 12.4 g. At an illustrative ₹150 per kg, that is about ₹1.86 per pack.
Now the useful part. If a stronger LDPE/LLDPE blend lets you move from 50 to 45 micron with the same holding force, film weight drops by 10%. On 5 lakh packs a month, that saves about 620 kg of film every month. This is why plant teams ask for trials of blended grades, not just a lower rate.

Common Shrink Film Problems and How to Fix Them
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Dog ears at the pack corners | Excess film or low heat at the ends | Reduce sleeve length, adjust air flow at the tunnel exit |
| Holes or burn-through | Tunnel too hot, or film gauge too thin or uneven | Lower temperature or raise conveyor speed; check gauge tolerance of the roll |
| Loose bundles after shrinking | Low shrink ratio or too little heat | Ask the supplier for MD/TD shrink test data; increase dwell time |
| Weak or opening seals | Seal temperature, contaminated seal area, film formulation | Clean seal bars, check seal settings, test another batch |
| Hazy or wrinkled finish | Uneven heat distribution or inconsistent film | Check tunnel air flow; compare rolls from different batches |
If the same problem appears only with certain rolls, the issue is usually batch-to-batch inconsistency in the film, not your machine. That is the strongest reason to buy from a manufacturer with in-house extrusion and QC rather than a trader.
How to Evaluate an LDPE Shrink Film Manufacturer
Use this checklist when shortlisting suppliers for an annual or quarterly contract:
- Manufacturer or trader? Ask to see the extrusion line. Direct manufacturers control formulation and consistency.
- Gauge tolerance: ask what thickness variation they guarantee across the roll width.
- Shrink performance data: MD/TD shrink percentage for your grade, tested per batch.
- Line trial: will they supply trial rolls and support a run on your tunnel?
- Capacity and lead time: can they handle your peak-season volume without delays?
- Pricing model: fixed rate contract, or linked to polymer price movement? Get it in writing.
- Printing: 1–2 colour logo printing on shrink film for brand identification.
- Logistics: dispatch location and freight time to each of your plants.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the best shrink film for beverage bottle multipacks?
For PET bottle multipacks, LDPE or LDPE/LLDPE-blend shrink film is most common, typically in the 45–75 micron range depending on bottle size and pack count. Run a trial on your own tunnel to confirm.
What is the minimum order for LDPE shrink film from Super Polymers?
Our minimum order is 300 kg. We also supply bulk and repeat contract volumes above 5 tonnes per month.
Can you print our logo on shrink film?
Yes. We offer 1–2 colour logo printing on shrink film for bulk orders.
Do you supply shrink film outside Chhattisgarh and MP?
Yes. We manufacture in Raipur and supply pan-India, including major metros and industrial hubs.
How can we reduce shrink film cost without affecting pack strength?
Calculate cost per pack instead of price per kg, then trial a stronger LDPE/LLDPE blend at a lower micron. Correct sleeve sizing and tunnel settings also reduce wastage.
